History

Dr. Morten Haugland and a small team of dedicated individuals originally worked to provide educational and behavioral services to children and their families in their homes. Through this work, they saw the need for a center-based program.

In 2005, Dr. Haugland opened Haugland Learning Center (HLC) as a full day (currently 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM) educational program. Due to rapid growth, and to the delight of the current and waitlisted students, HLC moved to a bigger facility in January 2007.

Philosophy

All children deserve the opportunity to learn and become happy, healthy, and productive adults.

Children with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, require specially designed services to reach their full potential. HLC strives to meet the needs of every child while keeping the following goals in mind:

  • Use research-based treatment and educational programs.
  • Educate each child in as least a restrictive environment as possible.
  • Respect the needs of the child and family in providing intervention.

Testimonials

Haugland Learning Center has been a blessing to my family. They took my son, J.D., immediately, even before the Autism Scholarship was approved for him. I have seen such a change in his behavior and academics since starting at HLC. he has become almost a whole different child attitude-wise. I can't say anough about the center and the wonderful staff. He has bonded with everyone there.

Haugland Learning Center has taken the lead in working with children with autism. As parent of a ten-year-old son with Aspergers, a high functioning type of autism, we would highly recommend their unique educational techniques to others. It takes a huge amount of energy, courage, commitment, patience, and determination to parent or teach a child like our son, Johnny, and at Haugland Learning Center, they are doing it and doing it well.

My son’s case manager went to visit Haugland and begged me to try it. She said most of the kids in the ASPIRE program were like Jabari, high-functioning, extremely bright, yet misunderstood. Honestly, I was so exhausted and disappointed with our previous educational experience that I was ready for home-schooling, for I was sure no school could understand him or teach him the way he needed to be taught.  His learning style required lots of time and individual attention. Even I struggled with understanding him and teaching him.

After speaking with Dr. Haugland on the phone several times as I was seeking advice, and being treated with such respect and understanding, without Jabari being a student there, I thought it just might be worth a try.

Today, I clearly understand “its darkest before the dawn”. What my son has accomplished in one year both academically and socially is nothing short of a miracle.  Truly God knows when we are at the end of our rope.

Jabari was behind in every subject and now he is current and loves to do schoolwork.  He plays with kids at school and at home which he never used to do unless it was him chasing and trying to scare kids. He independently does homework, whereas before, he would only do work if I sat beside him, preventing me from taking care of my own household responsibilities. He talks about teachers being fair and discipline being reasonable. I had never heard this kind of talk from him before.

The way the school works with the family to create the best educational experience for the child is a godsend, particularly in light of the special needs of each child and the knowledge that the family has.Since coming to Haugland, I have such high hopes for Jabari’s educational future and I did not feel this way before. I am certain that he will graduate high school and go on to college thanks to Haugland Learning Center.
